Clicks, Leads and Qualified Enquiries: Clear Reports
Understand clicks, submitted leads and qualified enquiries. Define marketing reports, remove duplicates and compare costs using clear business outcomes.
A click shows an interaction with an advertisement or link. A lead records a defined request or submission. A qualified enquiry is a request reviewed against agreed business criteria. These are different stages, and useful marketing reports keep them separate.
For a Lucknow business owner, the first question should not be how many leads did we get? Ask what the report means by a lead, where that number comes from and what happened afterwards. Clear definitions help identify problems attracting visitors, receiving enquiries, reaching people or matching the offer to their needs.
Create a small reporting dictionary
Agree definitions before comparing campaigns:
- Ad click: a recorded interaction with an advertisement. It does not prove successful page arrival or an enquiry.
- Website visit: a visit recorded by the measurement system. It does not prove a request for information.
- Contact-button click: someone selected a contact route. It does not prove a sent message.
- Submitted enquiry: the business received a request through a defined channel. It does not prove relevance.
- Qualified enquiry: a request meeting agreed criteria after review. It is not a confirmed sale.
- Customer or sale: a defined business outcome has occurred. It does not prove every earlier interaction caused it.
Use wording the team understands. A clear definition is more useful than a sophisticated dashboard label.
Understand why clicks and visits differ
Google Ads explains that a click can be counted even when the person does not reach the website. Its official click definition helps explain why clicks and recorded visits need not match.
A report’s clicks column should identify the actual metric used. Do not assume every platform column counts the same interaction. Record platform, metric name, date range and reporting timezone. This makes differences easier to investigate without immediately deciding one report is wrong.
Count a received request rather than an intention
A contact button is a useful but incomplete signal. Someone may open WhatsApp and close it without sending anything. A visitor may press Submit while a required field is missing. Neither should automatically become a completed enquiry.
Define the reliable point at which a request exists. For a website form, that may be a successfully stored submission. For phone or WhatsApp conversations, it may require an operational record after the contact arrives. Keep tests identifiable and separate from genuine outcomes.
Use event names honestly
Google’s recommended-event guidance distinguishes submitting information from later qualification and purchase outcomes. Do not trigger generate_lead merely because a visitor opened a contact option, or purchase because they viewed a price.
Agree triggers, validation and duplicate-handling rules with the developer. Confirm reported events represent intended actions. This is a measurement plan, not a claim that particular tracking has been installed.
Define qualification around the service
For a website-development service, useful criteria may include a relevant project requirement, a service the team provides and a workable way to continue discussion. Other businesses need different checks.
Keep qualified separate from ready to buy immediately. Someone researching a relevant project can be genuine without a confirmed launch date. Keep unreachable, pending review, duplicate and unrelated enquiries distinct. If every unanswered call becomes a bad lead, reporting may hide a follow-up problem.

Review duplicates without losing context
One person may submit a form and later send a WhatsApp message about the same requirement. Decide whether reporting counts requests, conversations or unique opportunities. These totals answer different questions.
Give records stable references and review possible duplicates before combining them. Preserve source history and the relevant next action. A shared phone number is a signal to investigate, not automatic proof that two requests are identical. Count repeated activity separately when it concerns a genuinely different requirement.
An illustrative Lucknow report
These figures are invented solely to explain calculations. They are not Appluk campaign results, benchmarks or forecasts.
Imagine a Lucknow service business reports advertising spend of ₹6,000, 300 recorded ad clicks, 24 submitted enquiries, 20 distinct opportunities after review and 8 qualified opportunities.
- Spend divided by clicks: ₹20 per click.
- Spend divided by submissions: ₹250 per submission.
- Spend divided by distinct opportunities: ₹300 per opportunity.
- Spend divided by qualified opportunities: ₹750 per qualified opportunity.
None is a customer-acquisition cost because the example gives no confirmed customer count. Label the denominator whenever reporting a cost. Two agencies may appear to disagree while calculating different stages.
Separate advertising spend from service fees
Explain which costs are included. Platform-spend reports may exclude agency management, creative production, landing-page work and other agreed expenses. A business may want a separate total-marketing-cost view.
Both are useful if clearly labelled. Do not compare one campaign’s platform-only cost with another campaign’s combined service-and-media cost as though they use the same basis.

Allow time for qualification and follow-up
A request submitted today may be reviewed later. A project discussion may happen after the reporting period ends. Record the extraction date and distinguish recent enquiries awaiting review from completed outcomes.
When reviewing a period’s new enquiries, explain whether later qualification updates are included. Avoid silently changing definitions halfway through a comparison. If the business changes criteria, note when that happened.
A reporting disagreement sometimes starts with incomplete destination tracking. The landing-page checklist helps identify missing confirmations and confusing contact routes.
Keep private details out of routine analytics
Marketing reports usually need aggregate stages and outcomes, not full customer messages. Google’s guidance on avoiding personally identifiable information addresses email addresses, personal phone numbers and exposure through URLs.
Keep enquiry text and contact details in the appropriate business system with suitable access. Review analytics parameters and respect consent choices. Do not place customer messages in public screenshots used to demonstrate campaign performance.
Frequently asked questions
Is every submitted form a qualified lead?
No. Submission and qualification are separate stages. Review against agreed criteria and record the outcome.
Should a WhatsApp-button click count as a lead?
Report it as a contact interaction unless a reliable signal confirms a request was received. Opening the app alone is insufficient.
Why does my agency report more leads than my sales team?
Check definitions, duplicates, tests, date ranges and pending reviews. The teams may be counting different stages.
Is the campaign with the lowest submission cost always better?
No. Consider relevance, follow-up and eventual business outcomes. Cheap submissions alone do not establish value.
Should enquiries awaiting review be marked unqualified?
No. Keep a pending category until review is complete. Missing information differs from a confirmed mismatch.
